Pagoda with beautiful views
The Japanese Peace Pagoda is one the best things to see around Galle (more precisely in the town of Rumassala) and you can get there via tuk-tuk from anywhere in the area. The pagoda was originally built by the Japanese Nipponzan-Myōhōji order of monks to help promote understanding, unity, and peace around the world, but primarily among Buddhist countries (which Sri Lanka of course is).
When you arrive, you’ll find a gleaming white stupa adorned with various golden Buddha statues, each of which is slightly different as each major Buddhist country in Asia has its own depiction of the Buddha, usually incorporating local physical characteristics. There is also a small indoor shrine featuring Japanese Buddhas and traditional drums which are occasionally played by the monks but we didn’t inquire as to when.
Really, the best reason to visit the Peace Pagoda are the views. You have an absolutely breathtaking view of the entire city of Galle, the bay, and the surrounding jungle. We spent about 15 minutes exploring the pagoda and temple and them just lazily looking out over the sea. If you’re in Galle for a few days and want an interesting afternoon activity, I’d really recommend the Japanese Peace Pagoda.
