Famous for the rooster
Barcelos is famous because it is where they make the symbol that represents Portugal, the rooster, who according to legend sang despite being roasted to prove the innocence of a wrongly accused pilgrim, when he was to be hanged. From then until now the famous colored roosters are in every corner of the country. The rooster is the souvenir purchased by tourists. The first thing we reached was the river Cavado which we crossed by a medieval bridge, after crossing we saw a XV century pillory and just after that the parish church of the town (dedicated to St. Maria Major). Its construction began in the thirteenth century but it has been reformed several times since.
