A distinctive city hall
The Praetorian Palace, located in Piazza Pretoria, opposite the stunning decorative fountain, is also known as Palazzo delle Aquile, for the eagles that adorn its exterior. It was first built in 1462, although it has been extensively remodeled since then. It has been home to the city council, and is still the City Hall. The facade has a statue of Santa Rosalia, who became patron saint of Palermo after a procession of her bones (found in 1624) saved the city from an epidemic. The numerous plaques on the facade commemorate various important historical events, including the visits of Pope John II
