Archaeological ruins in downtown Barcelona
El Born Cultural Center (often known simply as El Born CC) is an archaeological site and cultural complex houses in the Mercat Born, a grand old Parisian-style marketplace in the heart of one of Barcelona’s most interesting and bohemian neighborhoods: El Born. When the market was being renovated in the early 2000’s, excavators came across the remains of an entire 18th-century neighborhood that had been destroyed during Napoleon’s invasion of the city. Now, these remains have been cleaned up and cataloged and are on display for free for all who are interested. If you want to take a closer, more-in depth look at the ruins, there are guided tours available for around €5.00. It’s actually pretty amazing to think that the remains around only 300 or so years old…when I first saw them I was convinced that they had to be Roman!
