Propongo una pequeña ruta por Bruselas ...
Propongo una pequeña ruta por Bruselas que tendrá por destinación los almacenes Old England, edificio de estilo modernista (Art Noveau) del siglo XIX. No me detendré en explicar los diferentes rincones por los que discurrirá este pequeño paseo, ya que intentaré crear rincones en minube para cada uno de ellos.
El lugar de partida es la Grand Place (Grote Markt), centro político y comercial de la capital belga y una de las plazas más impresionantes de Europa. Desde allí, cogeremos la Rue de l'Etuve y nos dirigiremos hacia el Manneken Pis, la pequeña estatua de un niño que desde hace tiempo se ha convertido en el principal emblema de Bruselas. Después, tomaremos la calle Eikstraat, que sube describiendo una pequeña parábola hasta cruzarse con la Rue de l'Escalier y en la que podemos descubrir algunas paredes pintadas con escenas de cómic, otra de las enseñas de la ciudad. Esta intersección, con una pequeña glorieta triangular en la parte central, es un sitio de lo más encantador. Seguiremos por Eikstraat unos pocos metros hasta llegar a la Plaza Saint Jean, un sitio perfecto para descansar un poco después de tanta subida. Una vez recuperados, cogeremos la Rue Saint Jean, que nos llevará hasta la Place Albertine y el Mont des Arts, unos espléndidos jardines que permiten acceder al Palacio Real y ofrecen una magnífica vista de Bruselas. Subiremos por los jardines del Mont des Arts y, justo antes de llegar a la Place Royal, nos encontraremos con el edifico Old England.
Los almacenes Old England se inauguraron a finales del siglo XIX y representan uno de los más bellos ejemplo de arquitectura modernista (Art Noveau) de la capital belga. El Modernismo fue un movimiento artístico nacido en Europa a caballo de los siglos XIX y XX que rompió con los moldes clásicos en una gran variedad de disciplinas y expresiones artísticas (artes plásticas, literatura, arquitectura, etc.). Bélgica fue el país que vio nacer el llamado arte de "la libertad de formas", y Bruselas está repleta de edificios que nos recuerdan ese periodo esplendoroso.
El edificio Old England alberga actualmente el MIM (Museo de los Instrumentos Musicales: Http://www.Mim.Fgov.Be/), en el que se pueden contemplar sus más de 1.000 piezas expuestas siguiendo una serie de recorridos temáticos que permiten experimentar los sonidos melódicos de los instrumentos presentados.
