Quintessential African city
Nouakchott, a quintessential African city, faces serious problems in its development. A total lack of infrastructure, environmental and circulatory chaos, unsafe roads, garbage pollution and especially the infamous poverty make the capital of Mauritania a city lacking in growth planning. The lack of sewers, water or waste treatment was evident throughout our visit to this coastal city on the Atlantic Ocean (it is also at threat from being below sea level). The fragile dunes have been the basis for poor construction, which increases its instability. The two major mosques are the Saudi and Moroccan.
