5 reviews of Ninna-ji Temple

A World Heritage Site

The Ninna-ji is a Buddhist temple of the Shingon school located in the northwest of the city of Kyoto, about 20minutes walk from Kinkaku-ji. It was built in the early Heian period in 886 and is a UNESCO world heritage site. Its construction was ordered by the emperor Koko to spread the teaching of Buddhism, but he died before it was finished. From 888 to 1869, it was tradition for emperors to send their non-firstborn children here to become priests. In 1467, the temple was destroyed by fire during the Onin wars, and it was rebuilt 150 years later. What we see now is the result of the reconstruction.

Still, you can feel the history and majesty of the temple through its doors.

The quiet temple

The last of the temples we visited in Kyoto was the Ninna-ji. It was not on our list but the last day in the city we had some time after going to the zen garden of the Ryoan-ji temple and decided to invest in visiting this place. The best way to get to Ninna-ji is by bus 26 from Kyoto station. One of the best things about this temple is that, unlike in others, you can access almost the entire site for free. You can see all the buildings from the outside, and you only have to pay if you want to enter any of them. We are content to see everything from the outside: its bell tower, the five-story pagoda and the rest of buildings dating from the 17th century. The grounds surrounding the temple are like a large garden to which you can even go with the snack and spend an afternoon in the shade of the large trees of the enclosure. It is one of the perfect places in Kyoto to see the flowering of the cherry trees every spring.
