A fascinating and unusual experience

Excellent

About 20 miles down the coast from North Miami Beach, you can find over 250 nests of Caretta Loggerhead turtles. Trails in the sand show where the eggs are buried, so Florida's marine specialists place protective cones and signs to keep people away. On each sign you can see the date on which the particular nest was discovered, so you can work out when the eggs will hatch (from day 45 to day 60). Turtles are often born in the coolest time of the day, at night or very early morning. After discovering the nests we became obsessed with the idea, and came back regularly to watch and see if we might spot the baby turtles. One of the clues is to look at the top of the nest, which begins to sink when the turtles start heading out to sea.

I didn't get there in time to see the hatching, but as I approached the nest, I noticed that even though most of the turtles were already out, some had remained trapped in the sand. I gently took them one meter from the shore and left them to enter the sea. Sadly, because of marine predators and other problems, less than 1% of baby turtles survive. 3 days after the reptiles hatch, experts are responsible for making an inventory of the eggs. They note the number of eggs not fertilized, live turtles born and those who died inside. These animals weigh between 80 and 200 kg, approximately. I really loved this opportunity to share in a fascinating and unusual experience.
