Museu Nacional dos Coches
On May 23, 1905 the “Royal Coach Museum” open in Lisbon by initiative of Queen Amelia of Orleans and Bragança, Princess of France, who married King Carlos I of Portugal.
The world’s first coach museum occupied the former Royal Riding School, specifically adapted to receive a unique collection of coaches, berlins, carriages, calashes, phaetons, litters and sedan chairs, splendidly decorated, from the 17, 18 and 19th century.
On May 23, 2015 the Museu dos Coches’s collection moved to a brand new building by the Brazilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha, winner of the 2006 Pritzker Prize, a new reason to visit this extraordinary collection.
