Friday Mosque
Ruins are all that remain of this Muslim mosque in the North Acropolis archaeological site of Segesta-Sicily. It was the first to be identified with certainty, thanks to archaeological excavations, which identified the niche of the mihrab (an indisputable element of every mosque). This mosque is 20 x 11 meters, and was divided into two naves parallel to the qibla wall. This was oriented towards Mecca indicating the direction of prayer. It was the "Friday mosque" because every Friday all adult men gathered for solemn prayer. It was built in the 12th century by the Muslim community established at the summit of Mount Barbaro.
