Ubicado a un costado de la basílica de la Merced, el museo existe desde 1873 cuando fue concebido como un museo de antigüedades. El sacerdote mercedario Benjamín Rencoret recolectó material de diversos países americanos como Ecuador, Paraguay, Perú, Argentina y otros,que son parte de la muestra permanente de este recinto y que tiene salas de cultura pre-hispánicas, imaginería, pintura colonial, platería litúrgica, textiles arqueológicos, etnográficos e históricos y una colección de cultura Rapanui. El lugar está abierto de lunes a viernes de 10 a 14 y 15 a 18 horas.
