One of Madrid's best outdoor terraces
MÜR Cafe is a trendy little cafe in a quiet square right off Calle Princesa, one of the main arteries in downtown Madrid. I'd have to say that the outdoor terrace at MÜR Cafe is probably in my top 3 favorite terraces in the entire city. The little plaza is called Plaza Cristiano Martos and it's like a little oasis of peace, shade, and cocktails in the heart of downtown. The plaza is a little ways above the level of the street so it's quiet and it's full of large, shady trees and historic statues and fountains that create a classic, stylish vibe.
The cocktail list is heavy on the gin tonics (like everywhere in Madrid), but being a Southern man I decided to try one of the drinks I miss most from home: a mint julep. They served it ice cold in a mason jar with just the right balance of mint and lime so that it didn't overshadow the taste of the bourbon. My wife ordered a mojito made with violet extract and blackberries that was just delicious. I'm not usually one for sweet drinks but I have to admit that it was damn good. They also have a great selection of Spanish craft beers (try "La Virgen" or "Cibeles") and imported hard ciders from the UK and Scandinavia.
We just stopped by for a drink, but the food menu seemed good and I'll probably swing back by to try it sometime. I hear the brunch is amazing and they serve up all the classics like Eggs Benedict, full English breakfasts, and bagels with salmon and cream cheese. Check it out before it becomes too popular to find a seat!
