A modern road
The island of Madeira has a very modern road infrastructure that will allow you to choose a place to be your "base camp" (eg Funchal - not the most original choice, it must be said) and then travel to other places during your holiday. It's not uncommon to encounter a tangle of tunnels and flyovers when driving along the highways. Try to vary your way of getting around, or you might miss the island's most beautiful scenery.
