Galle Mosque is situated within the colonial district

In Sri Lanka, 9% of the population is Muslim. They are known as the Moors of Sri Lanka, because they arrived during the wave of immigration that came from Saudi Arabia after the prophet's death. There are people who have recently converted to Islam. The Moors lived for centuries in Sri Lanka, which mainly engaged in maritime business. Galle Mosque is situated within the colonial district, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and a large population still live and work here. It is a small mosque, painted white, with a clock displayed on the facade. Non-Muslims are not allowed to visit, just in the same way as a church.

Inside, there is a part for women and one for men. But overall women pray at home.
