El mayor templo musulmán de Portugal, es decir, la mezquita aljama de Lisboa, ha sido revestida con azulejos traídos de Irán, de color azul y turquesa y ornados con aleyas coránicas.
El mihrab, el alminar, las inscripciones del interior y las dos cúpulas —la grande y la pequeña— de esta mezquita aljama han sido recubiertas por azulejos de color turquesa, lapislázuli, azul y celeste, muy al estilo persa y cuya rareza en el país lusitano atrae todas las miradas.
Con 50.000 fieles, los musulmanes son la mayor de las minorías en este país de 10,5 millones de habitantes emplazado en el suroeste de Europa. La mayor parte de la población musulmana en Portugal está integrada por emigrantes indios, pakistaníes y de países africanos.
