Velasco Monument
Anyone who has visited this beautiful city has probably run into this monument, right in the center of the San Cristobal de las Casas park in Chiapas, and surely wondered who was this prominent person to deserve this recognition. Manuel Velasco Suarez was the Governor of the State of Chiapas from 1970-1976, and distinguished for his educational work which led to the founding of the Autonomous University of Chiapas, the Medical School, and the State Ecological Research Center of the Southeast. In 1982, he founded the Mexican Medical Association for the Prevention of Nuclear War, an affiliate of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985.
