Monument to Juan Manuel González Durán

En el centro de la típica Plaza de las Angustias, uno de los centros vitales de la ciudad, se yergue un monolito piramidal a uno de los tripulantes del Plus Ultra. El monumento fue inaugurado el 8 de noviembre de 1999 conmemorando el centenario de su nacimiento en esta misma ciudad. Aunque llegó a ser teniente de navío en el mes de enero de 1926, fecha que se recuerda en el monumento, el alférez de navío Juan Manuel Durán González era uno de los cuatro tripulantes del Plus Ultra, el primer avión que logró atravesar el Atlántico Sur, cubriendo el recorrido España-Argentina. Cuenta la historia que en Cabo Verde tuvo que desembarcar para aligerar de peso el avión antes del salto definitivo. A pesar de ello el jerezano es un personaje recordado en Canarias donde tiene una calle dedicada e innumerables referencias. El águila sobre la bola preside el monumento, dividido en una serie de caras prismáticas con alegorías respecto a aquel acontecimiento. Por la parte trasera hay un busto firmado por un tal F. Durán. Alrededor del conjunto hay un pequeño estanque cerrado por un soto ajardinado. El resto de la plaza está enlosada y tiene una serie de árboles y jardines en sus partes exteriores. Es un lugar muy concurrido por ser parada de autobuses, hoy mismo he cogido uno allí, y por hallarse cerca del centro y de los barrios flamencos de la ciudad. Juan Manuel Durán llegó a ser profesor de la Escuela Naval de Barcelona donde murió el 19 de julio de 1926 participando en una exhibición aérea. Su cuerpo fue enterrado en el Panteón de Marinos Ilustres de San Fernando, donde puede ser contemplada su lápida.

In the center of the typical Sorrows Square, one of the vital centers of the city, stands a pyramidal monolith one of the crew of the Plus Ultra. The monument was inaugurated on November 8, 1999 commemorating the centenary of his birth in this city. Although he became lieutenant in January 1926, date to be remembered in the memorial, the lieutenant Juan Manuel Duran Gonzalez was one of the four crew members of the Plus Ultra, the first plane that managed to cross the South Atlantic covering the Spain-Argentina tour. History tells us that Cape Verde had to disembark weight to lighten the plane before the final leap. Nonetheless the Jerez is a character in Canary remembered where it has a dedicated street and innumerable references. The eagle on ball chairs the monument, divided into a series of allegories prismatic faces with respect to that event. On the back there is a bust signed by one F. Duran. Around the whole there is a small pond enclosed by a grove garden. The rest of the square is paved and has a number of trees and gardens in its outer parts. It is a busy place to be bus stop today I caught one there, and be near the center and the Flemish city neighborhoods. Juan Manuel Duran became a professor at the Naval School of Barcelona where he died on July 19, 1926 to participate in an air show. His body was buried in the Pantheon of Illustrious Sailors of San Fernando, where his tombstone can be seen.
