Monument in Homage to Women of Vejer
Contemplate a black sculpture in the streets of one of the white villages in the wonderful province of Cádiz. It is precisely this contrast which compels you to go closer and carefully admire the curious sculpture while guessing the reason for its construction. On the wall in front of the sculpture a plaque attests that it is a tribute to the women of Vejer, erected in 2007 by the Council of Women of Vejer de la Frontera. The sculpture depicts a middle-aged woman with sad and unfree eyes wrapped in a long black dress. The sculpture claims the right to freedom all women have today. This tribute to gender equality and women's rights is especially important in Vejer as women have worn long black tunic shaped dresses that hid most of their faces in this town for years.
