Monterrico Beach is the favorite beach of foreigners. There are early surprises because in Central America, one expects white sand beaches and blue sea, but the beach is black volcanic sand and with much of this swirling around, the Pacific water is not as clear as in other places. But it's a cute, quiet town with fishermen living in huts. they spend much of the day watching life from a hammock. There are a dozen hotels, from the cabins to the very cute cheap Tzabal Utz where you can stay for 5-30 euros per person per night.
