Monolith of the Tropic of Capricorn
Qumahuaca is a village located in the Quebrada de Humahuaca, over 2600 meters above sea level and with only 350 people living there. Here, you can find an imaginary line marking the Tropic of Capricorn. On December 21 at noon, a perfect shadow is cast, perpendicular to the monolith. Every June 20, the area of the Tropic of Capricorn is transformed into a meeting place of different Aboriginal communities inhabiting the Quebrada, celebrating the Inti Raymi, an ancient ritual of Inca origin also known as Festival of the Sun. It is said to be the longest night of the year and the start of the Solar New Year.
