Moni Filosófou Monastery
Filosofou Moni is a very picturesque Greek monastery situated on the west bank of the Gorges of Lousios. It is dedicated to worshiping the Mother of God, and it was named after the person that founded it, John Lambardopoulos, who was nicknamed the philosopher of light. The monastery consists of two separate complexes. The most recent (Nea Moni Filosofou) lse is pretty easy to reach if you come by road. It dates back to the last days of the 17th century and it was recently restored. The monastery has a magnificent frescoes of the Cretan School, signed by one Victor Cretan. The oldest part (Palia Moni), that is going to end any day now, is 500 m in Lousios Gorge, and is only accessible by a footpath.
