Monastery of St. Michael the Archangel

About 15 km from Ruse, a border town of Romania and Bulgaria, you will find the village of Ivanovo which is home to the monastery of San Miguel Arcangel, a beautiful monastery built during the reign of the Second Bulgarian Empire, in the twelfth century. It was then a very important spiritual and cultural center. It was founded by Yoakim, ve later became Pope. The tsars Ivan Alexander and Ivan Assen II of Tarnovo, which was then the capital of the kingdom, contributed to the construction of the monastery. The special feature is that the monastery is built on the rock of a mountain. To get there you have to go up a dirt road, leaving the car at the bottom.
