3 reviews of Misericordia Church

Very noteworthy

This church is located just behind City Hall (You can see its facade from the Praça João III ). It was built in 1589 as a chapel for the House and Mercy Hospital. These were annexed and founded by Bishop Rodrigo de Carvalho a few years earlier. It's a small church with a single nave, a rectangular plan, a bell tower, and a granite facade with Mannerist influences. The round arch portal is framed by Tuscan columns with Doric capitals, and topped with a pediment shaped shell.
