Splendour and Wealth in Every Corner
The Convent of Christ in Tomar (Portugal) was occupied for 200 years by the Templars, who were subsequently displaced by the Militia of Christ at the end of the 14th century. The master of the order was the great Henry the Navigator. The order benefited from the findings of the "New World", and their splendour and wealth was reflected in the convent's construction. There are no less than seven cloisters, including the Great Cloister or Don Joao III, Lavagem Cloister, Cloister do Cemitério, two Corvos Cloister, Cloister of Santa Barbara, Cloister da Miga, and Cloister da Hospederia. The Claustro da Miga is square with four wings and is where the friars of the Order of Christ gave food to the poor.
