Legendary Caves full of Mystery

The Meschers caves are known as being caveman dwellings. They used to be old fishing shelters on the Gironde estuary. The quaint appearance is due to the erosion of the sandstone by the sea. Today, most of them have been renovated into hotels. These cavities are sufficiently large to accommodate houses. Known as the caves of Matata, these legendary caves are full of mystery. Sailors, buccaneers, men fleeing from justice, poor families, bohemians, artists, even tormented members of Nobility have lived here. People of all kinds have left something of themselves here. They can be reached by boat or

By foot through wooden walkways full of umbrellas and summer tables.
