Montreal tem alguns mercados públicos, e o Mercado Atwater é um deles. Localizado na rua de mesmo nome e na beira do canal Lachine, no sudoeste da ilha, ele faz parte do dia-a-dia da cidade há quase 100 anos e é também uma atração para turistas que gostam de conhecer os costumes dos lugares que visitam.
O Mercado foi inaugurado em 1933 e seu prédio em estilo art-deco com uma torre com relógio é um ícone para os montrealenses. No seu interior há lojas especializadas tais como confeitaria, delicatessen, queijaria, açougues e peixaria, loja de bebidas alcoólicas... E no exterior do mercado se espalham nos meses mais quentes bancas de produtores com uma grande e colorida variedade de produtos – hortaliças, frutas, grãos e cereais, flores. Como pode-se ver nas fotos, conheci o mercado no outono e havia várias bancas com uma infinidade de abóboras de todos os formatos e cores para o Halloween.
A estação de metrô mais próxima é a Lionel-Groulx, e a ciclovia do Canal Lachine também é um acesso muito usado. Pela sua proximidade com o canal e o Cais Atwater, o mercado é bastante popular para quem vai fazer pique-nique. Existem também muitas vagas de estacionamento grátis ao redor do mercado. Abre diariamente o ano inteiro.
