Maynooth Castle: the last of the row

Maynooth Castle: el último de la fila

Excellent
Yes, I say the last one because this castle we found at the very end of our tour of beautiful Ireland, just a few hours before delivering the rental car at the airport and taking a bus to the capital of the Republic. Therefore, because of its closeness we leave it to the end. What we did not know was that the Office of Public Works, on which most of the monuments we can visit on the island depended on, had begun some weeks of maintenance work to reinforce the inner (very few) structures of the castle. So we set about to surround him while we learned a little about him. The gigantic tower that appeared before us was apparently the largest in Ireland, as it corresponded to the immense ownership of lands, serfs and cattle that were under the rule of the Earl of Fitzgerald. So it is not difficult to guess that the castle was in its day an impressive fortress that could be compared to a self sufficient city. Little more than the tower and some remnants of walls remain of it, but it is preserved at full capacity the so-called Maynooth College, famous since 1700 for giving the most exquisite and rigid training to the Catholic priests of Ireland. A legend of great historical base tells that its proprietors clashed with the king of England and dared to attack Dublin. In a few hours they were defeated and their castle totally destroyed except the tower, given its defensive potential. Although we could not visit inside, it was a delight to know its history and sit down to have a snack on one of the terraces that by May, began to populate the streets of Maynooth.
