Largest Catholic church in Uruguay
Montevideo Metropolitan Cathedral has stood for over 100 years in Plaza Ituzaingo in the heart of the historic district of Montevideo. It's the largest Catholic church in Uruguay and is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and the Apostles Philip and James. It was declared as a National Historic Landmark. In its early years, it was used as a military stronghold to defend against attacks. It has also been used as a place of refuge, and for years was a silent witness to demonstrations and protest movements in times of war. It is not very large or ornate, but is quite nice in a quaint sort of way.
