Matachines

En cualquier poblado de México, en todas las comunidades, asentamientos, grandes ciudades e importantes capitales, existen estos grupos de danzantes llamados "Matachines". Representan el sincretismo religioso que nos caracterizan como pueblo mestizo: por una parte la devoción propia de la Religión Católica y las costumbres de adoración de los grupos indígenas. Los Matachines se asocian con la devoción de la Virgen de Guadalupe, aunque su intervención en todas las fiestas religiosas es común. Se trata de un grupo de danzantes que bailan ataviados a la usanza de los indígenas prehispánicos, con plumas, huaraches, arcos y flechas de madera; maracas ...todo ésto al son de un tambor que marca el ritmo. Pueden bailar horas enteras; por lo general inician en el atrio de las iglesias para terminar dentro de la misma entregando ofrendas de flores. Claro que no puede faltar en el grupo de Matachines uno en especial cuyo disfraz asusta a los niños y hace reír a quienes lo ven. Los Matachines representan las entrañas propias de nuestro pueblo que mezcla la religión de los europeos con la de los indios americanos.

In any town of Mexico, in all communities, settlements, large and important capital cities, there are these groups of dancers called "matachin". They represent the religious syncretism that characterize us as Metis people: first the own devotion of the Catholic religion and customs of worship of indigenous groups. The dancers are associated with the devotion of the Virgin of Guadalupe, although their involvement in all religious holidays is common. This is a group of dancers dancing dressed in the style of pre-Hispanic indigenous feathered sandals, wooden bows and arrows; maracas, ... all this to the sound of a drum that sets the pace. They can dance for hours; usually start in the atrium of the church to finish within the same offerings of flowers delivered. Sure you can not miss in the group matachin one in particular whose costume scares the children and makes them laugh to see it. The dancers represent the characteristics of our people who mix religion of Europeans with Native American guts.
