St. Mark's Square

Cuore della città alta medievale, la piazza ospita tutte le istituzioni politiche e al centro la [poi=183901]chiesa di San Marco[/poi], simbolo di Zagabria. E' una delle piazze più antiche della città: il suo nome si trova infatti in documenti che risalgono al 1256. Fu un luogo importante dal punto i vista sociale e commerciale, ma sul suo selciato furono eseguite anche condanne a morte di centinaia di persone (streghe, criminali, rivoluzionari). L'aspetto attuale venne definito dagli interventi urbanistici di epoca barocca che le diedero un aspetto più istituzionale e signorile. Qui ogni sabato e domenica a mezzogiorno si svolge la cerimonia del cambio della guardia. Sulla piazza si affacciano gli edifici più importanti del potere civile e religioso: il [poi=184371]Parlamento crato (Sabor)[/poi], la [poi=183851]residenza del Governatore (Banski Dvori)[/poi], la sede della Corte Costituzionale della repubblica di Croazia, l'ufficio parrocchiale della chiesa di San Marco. La piazza si può raggiungere da due direzioni principali: percorrendo fino in fondo la [poi=184241]Cirilometodska ulica[/poi], se si arriva dalla [poi=184101]funicolare[/poi], dopo aver superato al [poi=184111]torre Lotrscak[/poi], oppure risalendo al [poi=184191]Kamenita ulica[/poi], dopo aver superato la [poi=183891]Porta di Pietra[/poi], arrivando da [poi=184021]ulica Pavla Radica[/poi] e girando a sinistra in corrispondenza della [poi=184531]statua di San Giorgio[/poi], sulla trg Brace Hrvatskog Zmaja.

High medieval heart of the city, the square is home to all political institutions and in the center the church of St. Mark, the symbol of Zagreb. And 'one of the oldest squares of the city: its name is in fact in documents dating back to 1256. It was an important place from the point view of the social and commercial, but on its pavements were also completed executions of hundreds of people (witches, criminals, revolutionaries). The present appearance was defined by the urban planning of the Baroque era who gave a more institutional and elegant. Here every Saturday and Sunday at noon the ceremony of the changing of the guard. On the square are the most important buildings of the civil and religious power: crato Parliament (Sabor), the residence of the Governor (Banski Dvori), the seat of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Croatia, the parish office of the church of San Marco. The square can be reached from two directions: along the way into the Cirilometodska ulica, if you come from the funicular, after passing the tower Lotrscak, or going back to Kamenita ulica, after passing the Stone Gate, coming from Ulica Pavla Radica and turning left at the statue of St. George, on Trg Brace Hrvatskog Zmaja.
