Central Market

The Central Market in Guatemala's Zone 1 is next to the central park, a few minutes walk from the National Palace and the Cathedral. You should go down the street coming out of Central Park by the side of the cathedral. Central Market now refers to the whole five block area where the shops sell everything, shoes, clothes, CDs, real shops. There are more stalls on the street, but the food more than anything else is in the market itself, which is in a basement. There are all kinds of fruits, vegetables, but also a lot of flowers and tropical plants very beautiful, and now more and more Guatemalan crafts.

Wooden objects, candles, precious stones, gold and silver can be found in the market. One thing that people really like are the "chapines", as they call the Guatemalans, they are sweets. Typical Guatemala sweets are very good, there's candied fruit, such as pumpkins, egg chimbo, fritters, fried milk, milk newsboys, curls, chilacayote, and coconut candies and delicious coconut cakes.

Central Market

The central market is in the city's historic centre, in Zone 1 and behind the cathedral. It is hidden beneath a parking lot and square, but don't be mistaken: it is a vast maze of 2 or 3 floors! Don't hesitate in going in, once inside you will discover an entire world. Food stalls and restaurants where you can buy cheap traditional food (less than 2 € for a menu). Try exotic fruits and vegetables or something local if you prefer. Candles, baskets, plastic, a bit of everything! The part that is sure to interest you the most? Half the level is dedicated solely to souvenirs / memorabilia. In my experience that's where you can get the best prices (much cheaper than the markets in area 13, and slightly cheaper than the market of Antigua if you can haggle).

Feel free to wander around and barter. There do not tend to be many tourists in the area, and there's one thing you must not forget: watch your bags! pickpockets are also active in Guatemala!

social and human richness

Multiculturalism and indosingracia that I found in the Guatemalan markets convinced me that we need to visit them to really be able to say that we have met the locals. Bunches of oinions, celery, radishes and the Guatemalan stew, with their artisan crafts. Bunches of onions, celery, radishes, the broth and puliques of Guatemala, along with their crafts and grocery stalls give an accurate panoramic view of the Guatemalan lifestyle and customs. It is wonderful to take away a memory in your heart and the experience of the diversity of the multicultural people and Guatemalan customs. You need to live

And share it to fill yourself with the social and human richness...
