Monument for the fallen
Undoubtedly one of the most impressive things I saw in my short visit to northern Germany in 2009 was the Marine-Ehrenmal, a huge tower of 85 meters high that stands facing the Baltic Sea off the coast of Laboe. About 20 km from Kiel, another important city in northern Germany, in the Hamburg region. It was built in 1936, and originally commemorated the fallen of the German Imperial Navy during the First World War. After the end of World War II it now commemorates the sailors of all nationalities who died during World Wars. There is an underground memorial hall at the foot of the tower, where a flame stays on and where you can see the different fleets that participated in separate world wars and the name of their fallen.
