Major Square of Olmedo

La Plaza Mayor de Olmedo se encuentra en pleno casco histórico de la villa, y curiosamente tiene forma triangular. Está rodeada de edificios típicos castellanos, de dos o tres plantas de altura y generalmente construidos en ladrillo y piedra, con soportales en su plantas bajas en cuyos locales hay varios restaurantes y cafeterías con terrazas. El edificio más destacable de la plaza es el antiguo Consistorio o [poi=84731]Casa de la Villa[/poi], que es actualmente un centro cultural. Al otro extremo de la plaza se encuentran el [poi=84734]Palacio de la Real Chancillería[/poi] y la [poi=84735]Casa del reloj[/poi], que ahora alberga sala de exposiciones y biblioteca. La zona central de la plaza está ocupada por unos jardines donde hay bancos de piedra para sentarse; en el centro se abre una especie de plazoleta circular donde se encuentra representado en el pavimento el escudo de armas de la villa. La plaza era el lugar donde se celebraban los mercados (los viernes) por privilegio real. De ella parten las principales calles peatonales del centro histórico, destacando especialmente la [poi=84875]Calle del Gamazo[/poi], llena de bares, restaurantes y pubs.

Plaza Mayor de Olmedo is located in the historical center of the town, and curiously has a triangular shape. It is surrounded by typical Castilian buildings, two or three stories high and usually built in brick and stone, with its arcaded ground floors in whose premises there are several restaurants and cafes with terraces. The most notable building in the square is the old town hall or Casa de la Villa, which is now a cultural center. At the other end of the square is the Palace of the Royal Chancery and Clock House, which now houses an exhibition hall and library. The central area of ​​the square is occupied by gardens where there are stone benches to sit; in the center a sort of square circle which is represented on the pavement coat of arms of the villa opens. The square was where the markets (Friday) were held by royal privilege. Out of it the main pedestrian streets of the historic center, especially highlighting the Calle del Gamazo, full of bars, restaurants and pubs.
