Main Theatre

One of the side streets that start from the Praza do Ferro is Calle La Paz, where the Teatro Principal is located, an Italian style building that was constructed in 1830. As a curiosity, its construction was a private initiative of Santiago Saez, who, having vetoed the entrance to the municipal theatre because of its liberal ideology, built a theatre of his own. Eventually, it passed down his family line, the Saez Pastor family, who were important bankers. In 1915, it underwent a major renovation, and gradually, the stage began to decline towards movies, until the cinema also closed. In 1983 it was acquired by the county, which restored it completely.
