The giant rock of Sigiriya
When the kings of Sri Lanka decided to install the capital city on the giant rock of Sigiriya, their first thought that it would be a good position to defend the nation against attacks by other peoples. The rock is 200 meters high and dominates a flat prairie, but for them that was not enough. A perimeter was outlined, which included a citadel, water reserves, essential to the survival of his people, the royal gardens, and a channel that was dug along the outside. The citadel is on the top of the square, with gardens at the bottom. You can only enter by bridge, on each side of the square. This bridge had a checkpoint.
