Largely unexplored
We arrived at the cruise port of Mahahual, a small, quiet fishing village that was devastated by Hurricane Dean in 2007. With virtually no tourist infrastructure, it's famous for its coral reef, especially for its proximity to the Banco Chinchorro (after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the 2nd largest reef in the world). Mahahual beach has its own reef where you can snorkel in its crystal waters and see many different types of fish. The atoll protects the beach, forming a kind of natural pool, so you can reach it easily swimming. The Costa Maya region is largely unexplored, in the whole Mahahual area there are twenty dive sites.
