Botanical garden
The Mae Fah Luang Garden, or "The Botanical Garden of the Grandmother", as the name suggests, is a nice, well maintained full botanical garden. It's home to trees, native plants and flowers, among which is the ubiquitous bamboo, palm trees, bromeliads and orchids. There is also a Ferris wheel, fountains, and a small lake with fish. It's located 1512 metres above sea level, and on the outskirts of a royal villa (bungalow in the mountains of the royal household). It can be reached by the road to Mae Sae from Chiang Rai, then passing Mae Rai you take the detour to Mae Fah Luang, from here there are signs (more than 35 kilometres from Chiang Rai).
So far no buses go there, so you have to rent a motorcycle, go by tour, or get to Mae Rai by bus and from take a taxi or tuktuk from there. I made the trip from Chiang Rai, which included several visits. Admission is 80 baht (May '09), but if you also go to the Doi Tung Royal Villa (the royal house next door), you save 20 bahts. Hours: 6:30 to 17:30
