Landscape completely changes
Lake Ohau, in the heart of the MacKenzie region, is the starting point for a spectacular two-day trek to the summit of Ohau, at nearly 2000 meters in altitude and with incredible views of the Southern Alps. The hike through prairie grass gives no shade until the beech forest, which is where the landscape completely changes. It's a several hour walk to a campsite on the forest's edge, and the next day you can climb to the summit shortly after dawn, leaving the backpacks back at camp.
