Pearl of Dorset
Lyme Regis is a small coastal village of about 4500 inhabitants located on the south side of England in the county of Dorset. It strategic location means that it was a large port from the thirteenth to the nineteenth century, when it was a hotbed of shipbuilding and a port to trade with the French. It didn't have the size to accommodate larger ships, so the port declined during the Industrial Revolution of the early nineteenth century. Today Lyme Regis has become a famous tourist town for its unusual "Cobb" pier. It is also part of the "Jurassic Coast", a coastal region with many interesting paleontological sites.
