Pays de la Loire
Loire River
The Loire River, a World Heritage Site, is part of a very historic and symbol region in Europe, the Pays de la Loire. Its shores bathed dozens of medieval and Renaissance castles, endless valleys and beautiful vineyards. The Loire is more than a river. The locals are very interested in caring for the natural environment, and it is a true way of life for them. Source of inspiration for poets and writers, the Loire has given birth to its margins cities such as Nantes, Saumur or Angers. From the junction of the river and the environment are born great leisure activities as "La Loire à vélo", a nice way to see the Loire and cultural heritage cycling.
Many people don't realize that it is actually forbidden to swim in the river, due to its strong currents and eddies underwater. In our walk along the river we found it to be almost virgin, having barely been influenced by man's touch. Its banks are lined with trees and the lush vegetation print the visitor a different feel, which depends on the stage of where they are at. And when the Loire finally joins the Atlantic passing through Nantes, the river opens as a stunning estuary that fascinates you. It is very much an essential part of Pays de la Loire. Be sure to enjoy it in all of its glory!
