First Urban Settlement
The town of Pucara or Pukara culture lies 61 kilometres north of Juliaca, on the road to Cuzco, at 3910 meters above sea level. It was the first urban settlement in the highland lake system. Pucara culture developed between 100 BC and 300 AD. About 2 blocks from the town's main plaza, there is a museum that exhibits granite steles and monoliths with zoomorphic figures in various sizes.
