Lighthouse
The Luarca Lighthouse Project jumped between the two banks of the Ria de Luarca, since the planners initially wanted to build on its current location, at the tip of Punta Focicón and extending to Punta Mujeres, on the otherside of the river, so it would also shed light on that coast. Finally, its construction was approved in 1861. The lighthouse was opened in 1862 with a 6th order fixed white light device that used an olive oil lamp. This was later replaced by slack, which operated until electrification in 1917. In hindsight, a flasher would have been added, which would have given a flash every 15" since 1949.
In 1945, an foghorn was installed. The lighthouse is situated about 300 meters from the centre of Luarca. It's built on the ruins of a castle and in the vicinity of a medieval church that also bears the name of Chapel of the Watchtower.
