The inside is incredible!
The Amsterdam Central Library is surely the last place you'd expect to find on vacation. With the possible exception of unique Bodleian Library in Oxford (where Harry Potter was filmed), I can't think of too many libraries I'd go out of my way to visit. I wouldn't have visited the library in Amsterdam if a local hadn't brought me there. Outside, it's a large, modern, and somewhat bland concrete building, but the inside is incredible. It's a huge space lit by natural light coming through the skylight in the center of the building. Absolutely everything is white and shelves, tables, chairs, and cabinets on the interior are all rounded and smooth, with the only touch of color coming from the hundreds of books, CDs, DVDs and people.
In the hall there is a piano which anyone can play. The national music conservatory is located right next store, so the piano actually makes a lot of sense. I was lucky... a guy started playing right when I went in and the environment was great. On the top floor there's a kind of self-service restaurant with a variety of tasty food and a terrace with spectacular views of the city.
