Na Piazza della Scalla – a praça em frente ao Teatro Scalla de Milão – há uma estátua de Leonardo da Vinci, esculpida em mármore pelo escultor Pietro Magni (1816-1877). Na realidade foi a obra realizada como resultado de um concurso para escolher o escultor que faria tal homenagem ao grande gênio italiano. O monumento é tão imponente e articulado que o autor levou 13 anos para conclui-lo, de 1859 a 1872. No alto, a figura imponente e séria de Leonardo, esculpida em um estilo consolidado e clássico. Em baixo, nos quatro lados da base, estão retratados os principais seguidores do mestre: Marco D’Oggiono, Andrea Salário, Cesare Da Sesto e Boltraffio. As figuras dos alunos, sugerem mais vida e entram no estilo local que à época se chamava “verista”, numa clara mudança de estilo do escultor. Mais românticas, mas não menos divertidas, as quatro lápides que narram alguns momentos importantes da carreira de Leonardo. Tal escultura acabou pesando na nomeação de Pietro Magni à cátedra de escultura em Brera, em 1860. A praça do teatro se encontra no final da Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a mais significativa edificação da Piazza Duomo, depois da catedral. Portanto, se o visitante estiver na Duomo, bastam apenas poucos passos para deparar-se com estas duas outras atracões milanesas, O Teatro Scalla e a escultura de Leonardo da Vinci.
