Dónde vamos Eva
Of Politics, Literature and Fame
It is one of Madrid’s most famous squares, since it’s made up by the Congress of Deputies, the Palace Hotel and the splendid statue of Cervantes. It is a beautiful corner, even though today it looks way to clean, after a deep remodeling that left it pure white. It is really nice that now it’s all pedestrian, and that you can enjoy this popular corner.
Cervantes and the “triumphant” lions on the main door of the Cortes constitute the touch of stone that every square needs. After a certain time, you discover that from a balcony located in an impressive building, comes out a group of automats that form the only existent carillon of Madrid.
Further down, the views towards Neptuno and Jerónimos are wonderful, and you can’t help but to sit down in a bench to enjoy the one-hundred year old trees that have survived in this square. Meanwhile, I wonder what the statue of Cervantes is doing here, but who cares, it goes well with the square and it reminds us that we are near the wonderful Las Letras neighborhood, and that the Congress is no more than an anecdote of this beautiful square.
While you enjoy the atmosphere, you can sometimes see a couple of famous people or politicians that like to come to this area. Then you look at Cervantes, who seems to say with a smile, “they are only mortals”.
I love this plaza, mainly because from it you have access to other cultural areas of Madrid, to those that house the Thyssen, Prado Museum, Caixa Forum and a big display of culture inside a must see city.
