A space with secrets

Largo di Torre Argentina is a historic square in the center of Rome that has four Roman temples from the 4th century BC and the ruins of the Theatre of Pompey. The square is named after the Torre Argentina (the ancient name of Strasbourg, France), which is derived from the Latin for silver mines, "argentoratum."

The ruins are currently much lower than the modern ground level and you can view them from above. In the 18th century, the Teatro Argentina was built to continue the tradition of drama which the theatres of Pompey and Balbus had previously begun in the neighborhood. The tower that you see is not actually the Torre Argentina, but rather the medieval-era Torre del Papito.

The secrets of Rome

Excellent

One of my favorite things about Rome is that you discover something unexpected around every turn. As I was just aimlessly wandering, I came across the Lardo di Torre Argentina which contains four Roman temples and the remains of the Theatre of Pompey.
