Laphroaig is the only distillery on Islay that is open on Sunday.
We took the Distillers Wares tour (55 pounds per person), if you are a true whisky aficionado this is most probably the tour to do.
The first part is a tour of the production line. Laphroaig is one of the few distilleries that still malt some of the barley on the premises. They also hand cut the peat from their land close to the airport. We were given some of the wash to taste. Then we went to the stills with a particular focus on the spirit safe and the point when they switch the spirit to the receiver. Both the shape of the still and the fraction which goes into the receiver can have a significant effect on the flavor.
