Lanercost Priory
Another essential stop on our visit to Hadrian's Wall was the monastery of Lanercost. Although it was constructed much later in 1166, it shows the symbolism of protection that was evident in the building of the wall centuries after the Romans abandoned Britain. This abbey, surrounded by spectacular scenery, was nearly built in the wall and, in many travel guides, it is included as part of the same tour. Built in honor of St. Mary Magdalene, this abbey is an excellent architectural example of England in the years XII - XIII. It is worth a visit, just to admire the wonderful views of English countryside.
