Fishing village
The fishing village of San Vicente de la Barquera is about 60 km from Santander, in the heart of the Natural Park of Oyambre. Puebla Vieja has been declared a Cultural de Cantabria and a Conjunto Histórico Artístico due to its rich heritage, it's an important enclave of Camino de Santiago on the coastal route. The wall and some VIII century doors are still preserved. It's a fortified, walled town with cobbled streets where it's a delight to wander and get lost. The lower area has Arches Street with the tourist information office and several restaurants. From the harbor ascend the steep streets to reach Castillo del Rey, XIII century, containing a museum of the city's history.
At the top is the church of Santa Maria de los Angeles, with its Gothic tower and 2 Romanesque doorways, inside is one of the most beautiful funerary sculptures in Spain: El sepulcro del Inquisidor Corro. Between the castle and the church are the ruins of the Hospital de la Concepción, the Tower of the Provost and Corro Palace, which houses the Casa Consistorial.
