The new town of Guatavita, north of Bogota, is an urban settlement, made to relocate the villagers who would be submerged by the construction of the Tomine reservoir. The urban design and architecture references the old white colonial style of architecture, roof tiles and woodwork. The village surrounds the large urban meeting spaces, shops, hotels, restaurants etc. Outside the village there are houses for locals.
Guatavita, in the days before the Spaniards arrived, played an important role within the Muisca culture, indigenous to the area that left us many legends related to the creation of the world and rich in gold jewellery, where the majority of the pieces are exhibited in the Gold Museum in Bogota.
